"Version 8 will be retired in April 2014, ending support for Mac OS X 10.5"

The download page states:  "Version 8 will be retired in April 2014, ending support for Mac OS X 10.5".  When version 8 is retired does that mean that it won't be able to download new virus definitions or just that the program itself won't be updated?

  • Thanks for the definition.  You were very clear.

The reason I ask is that version 9 runs about 7 processes while version 8 runs about 3 processes.  So version 8 would have much less impact on battery life (and less protection).  There seems no way to really turn off the extra features in version 9.  For instance if you turn off the web protection settings the process is still running.

So I was interested in sticking with version 8 just to avoid higher battery drain on my 3 year old MBP.
