software's strange behavior

First time use:  running scan of hard disk -- blue bar stops midway and items counter stops -- scan seems to be blocked or just spinning its wheels, bar not progressing.  So I press enter to see if scan can get started on its way again assuming a complete disk scan must go to the end of the bar. Instead a message pops up "This scan never completed" or something to that effect and the scan reerts back to a smaller blue bar as if starting over again.  Is this how it is supposed to work?  If so, it is very odd indeed.  How do I know the malware is not messing with th scan somehow and preventing it from completing?

  • When the bar stops moving, you'll see a file name underneath it... that file will likely be a large archive.  What's happening is that the scanner is uncompressing the archive and scanning its contents -- which doesn't progress the bar until all the contents are scanned.

    Pressing enter/return is the same as clicking the default button.

    Best suggestion is to do your initial on-demand scan with your external drives disconnected; doing this, the scan should take a couple of hours tops.  If the scan actually terminates early (the progress bar goes away), check the scan log to see why the scan stopped -- likely it hit a problem file or access privilege issue.
