Sophos Home Edition, Hang on Login

After some weird behaviour lately i've installed the Sophos Home Edition to my Lion.

The installation process was a bit (Installed through std user, using admin) weird because during the install the whole machine froze for ~ 15 minutes.

After the restart i'm loging in as user and i see the ball spinning now for 15 minutes and no signs of activity.

Is it updating ?  and/or this normal ?

thanks!

  • This is not normal, and both situations hint that the problem is with Sophos' attempt to connect to the live protection server.

If you start up with the shift key held down, it should disable login items etc. and allow you to get to the Finder.  After that, go to Sophos Anti-Virus Preferences, and uncheck the Live Protection option.  Reboot, and you should be able to log in normally.

Next is to troubleshoot why the software can't communicate with the Live Protection server via DNS lookup -- there have been a few others on here who have also experienced this issue, and it generally seems to be related to your network setup (firewalls, wireless connections, etc.).

  • It looks like we've been having significantly higher than normal activity on some of our US Live Protection servers, and the connections may have been timing out for you.  This is definitely the thing to disable to temporarily fix the problem.  Shortly everything should be back to normal, as we re-route the traffic to clear the congestion.
