Cleaning up a threat

I am just a beginner  with Sophos, but I have cleaned up to about 1000 or more WM/97 threats since installing the software.

During the last session I was able to process ten to twenty threats at a time. The status said the files could be cleaned without losing them. When the files were cleaned, those documents disappeared from the list and I continued on with the process until all of the files had been cleaned and there was no longer any list.

Today, the scan turned up over a hundred more of the same threat. When I authenticate and choose the "Clean Up Threat" option, the cleaning process begins, but when it is done, the files stay in the list and appear to still have the virus attached?

Why is it behaving different than the time before? Why are the cleaned files staying in the list and appear to be unaffected by being cleaned?

Thanks for you help.

  • Likely the ones you cleaned before were on your main filesystem, and the ones you're attempting to clean now are in an archive or backup system -- where they won't be cleaned as that could corrupt your archive.  Best solution is to move them all to a read/write location, clean them, then replace the archives/backups.
