Sophos Mac Free 7.3.9C very slow with Mac OS X 10.7 Lion

Either a recent virus database update, or the update to Mac OS X Lion, has resulted in Sophos 7.3.9C making my MacBookPro unbearably slow, and my MacPro a little less speedy.  So much so that I've had to turn "on access" scanning off on the laptop to make it usable.  Anyone else experiencing similar symptoms.

    Same here, on a fresh (today, April 5th 2012) install of Sophos Anti-Virus on OS X Lion 10.7.3.

    "Same" meaning that the initial full scan would only advance maybe one file in 5 to 10 seconds. As the app says there are over 2.2 million items to go through, that'd take up to, roughly, the next ice age making all Macs irrelevant... :)

    The speed picked up immediately when I switched off On-access scanning. I didn't touch any other preferences.
