Sophos Mac Free 7.3.9C very slow with Mac OS X 10.7 Lion

Either a recent virus database update, or the update to Mac OS X Lion, has resulted in Sophos 7.3.9C making my MacBookPro unbearably slow, and my MacPro a little less speedy. So much so that I've had to turn "on access" scanning off on the laptop to make it usable. Anyone else experiencing similar symptoms.

Do you know approximately what date this started happening on? It will help to narrow down what the possible factors may be.
