How to check if software is working on iMac Lion OS?

Under FAQ answer is .."black icon is in menu".. But my icon  shield is blue and it is in dock. I can update no problem. I just want to know if it is on. Is there any way to check?

    Black icon in menu refers to the shield icon on the top menu bar (next to the clock). You can quit the program (blue shield in dock) the AV is running if the shield is in the top menu bar.

    When the update fails the black icon has a 'x' inside it:
