How do I ignore scanning my Time capsule?

How do I stop Sophos Anti-Virys from automatically scanning my Time Capsule?  It has over seven-and-a-half million files on it, and would take an ETERNITY to scan, so how do I stop it automatically scanning the Time Capsule?

I use time machine without this problem.  Go to preferences; for on access scanning simply exclude your backup drive.  For on demand scanning, just open the console (from the icon in the menu bar, select "open Sophos Anti-Virus).  Create a a custom scan of your internal hard disk (if that is what you want to scan), and then just use custom scan.  The software will then  not attempt to scan external hard disks.

I assume that your backup drive (Time Machine)  is connected directly to USB or Firewire.

    This makes no sense...

    A) Why would preferences for "on-access scanning effect a scan of local drives?

    B) from your description, this exclusion does NOT effect the scan of local drives.
