Why is Sophos specifically "InterCheck" process nearly impossible to quit?

Why is Sophos specifically "InterCheck" process nearly impossible to quit?

What are the steps to get rid of the "InterCheck" process even though the app is closed. "quit" and nothing is running from the app.

I disabled "Enable Live Protection"

I turned off "on-access scanner"

I disabled "archive scanning for on-access scans"

I only want to use Sophos app whenever I want to not always. Its a great app but I don't want to have it run always byitself.

Anyone with any solutions ?

  • Hello stamatgeorge,

if you turn off on-access the archive scanning has no effect, that just as an aside.

The InterCheck process stays as you might turn on-access scanning on again at any time. Furthermore files are "fingerprinted" when they are scanned and if they obviously haven't changed when they are accessed again they are not rescanned. Securely caching the fingerprints requires that the process stays in memory.

I don't want to have it run always by itself

So you want to do without on-access scanning? That's giving up on a major feature of the product. As threats are "real-time" (gone are the days where "stuff" came on a diskette or was downloaded by ftp so you had the opportunity to scan it before executing it) protection should be real-time as well. Drive-by attacks don't even require you to deliberately download (and run) something or go to a certain "insecure" webpage. If all you want to do is occasionally run an on-demand scan (and I advise against it) then Sophos for Mac HE is an overkill.
