Error in SMTP client, domain: 12, code: 8

I checked the system log on my MacPro today, and there are hundreds of messages being posted by Sophos A/V, over and over again, every 30 seconds:

Dec  2 07:42:59: --- last message repeated 9 times ---

Dec  2 07:42:59 xxx /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/SophosAntiVirus.app/Contents/MacOS/SophosAntiVirus[84]: Error in SMTP client, domain: 12, code: 8

Dec  2 07:43:29: --- last message repeated 9 times ---

Dec  2 07:43:29 xxx /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/SophosAntiVirus.app/Contents/MacOS/SophosAntiVirus[84]: Error in SMTP client, domain: 12, code: 8

What does this mean?

  • This usually means that the SMTP server you've set up for mailing alerts can't be reached, IIRC.  In Sophos Anti-Virus, go to Preferences->Messaging, authenticate, and check that the settings for "Send an email alert..." are filled in correctly.

  • Thanks for the quick reply.  I suspect the SMTP server connection could not be made properly, because I use GMAIL, and Google's outgoing mail server requires it's own unique configuration.
