Possible to only scan hard drive manually?

Hi. I downloaded Sophos Antivirus then installed it. However, I don't want it running in the background. I only want to manually run it once in a while to scan my hard drive. The menu item had an option for hiding itself, but not for quitting.  Even after hiding the menu item, I ran Activity Monitor and saw two processes relating to Sophos Antivirus. I tried to force them to quit but it wouldn't work. I ended up uninstalling the software. I hadn't seen this forum so I'm thinking of downloading Sophos Antivirus again if someone can let me know how to disable Sophos's background processes and just use the application occasionally.

Thanks

  • keep in mind that you will be at risk of infection - having on access turned on will prevent you becoming infected or prevent a malicious file running. Sure the on demand scan will pick up anything when its run, but damage could have already be done by then. Then there is also the possibility of a rootkit infection (not sure of they exist for Macs (yet) but they do for Linux). Its potentially much harder (or even impossible) for an on-access scan to identify rootkit infection afte rthe fact, but on access would prevent it from being installed in the first case.
