Possible to only scan hard drive manually?

Hi. I downloaded Sophos Antivirus then installed it. However, I don't want it running in the background. I only want to manually run it once in a while to scan my hard drive. The menu item had an option for hiding itself, but not for quitting.  Even after hiding the menu item, I ran Activity Monitor and saw two processes relating to Sophos Antivirus. I tried to force them to quit but it wouldn't work. I ended up uninstalling the software. I hadn't seen this forum so I'm thinking of downloading Sophos Antivirus again if someone can let me know how to disable Sophos's background processes and just use the application occasionally.

Thanks

From the Sophos icon in the menu bar:

    1. Open Preferences…
    2. On-access Scanning
    3. if necessary, Click the lock to make changes.
    4. Stop Scanning
Some processes relating to Sophos will continue to run; that's the nature of good antivirus software that protects itself from malicious activity.
