When scanning hard drive, java console comes up. (Using Free Mac Home Edition)

Thanks for the free Sophos AV for Macs. I always used Intego or clamXav, but thought I would try Sophos.

I have a question.

When I am running a scan of my hard drive, the java console comes up.....I have no clue what it means.

A tech friend told me to set my java settings so it doesn't debug Java.

But, isn't it a good idea to debug Java?

I just never had any AV that my java console comes up.

And since I am not a code writer nor understand what the java log says, or means, why DOES the java console come up?

Does anyone know?

And since I have a Mac, are we also supposed to deleted older versions of Java like users do on Window's machines?

I have a Powerbook G4 running the latest version of Tiger....and yes, I know I should update to Leopard, but I have another Mac and it runs Leopard....

I get tired of updating the OS so much on Mac machines....I wish Jobs would slow down a bit.

Thanks in advance.

  • Sophos does not use Java in its products, so if the Java console is coming up, it is likely due to a background process you are running that activates a Java program when certain files are accessed.

Your friend is correct that you should turn off Java debugging.  "Debugging" does not mean that Java will remove any "bugs" it finds -- it is a programming term meaning that people writing Java software can watch their code execute to check for errors and make modifications.  If you are not writing or debugging Java software, you do not need the console enabled.  The console and debugging tools in general are only useful if you are a code writer and understand what the java log says.  Enabling debugging in any system includes a noticeable performance hit (the system will slow down) as the debugger is monitoring each step in the running code.

You don't need to delete older versions of Java; Apple manages security patches for all versions of Java installed on your computer.  There are signs that this might change in the future (you'll have to manage it yourself), but as for now, you can let Apple manage Java for you through Software Update.

Thank you for trying out Sophos AV.
