Anti-virus for Mac freezes

I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.4 on a Macbook. I ran it overnight and when I tried to wake my computer up in the morning all I got was the spinning beach ball, so I had to force restart. I tried running it again and it froze on me with about 10% to go, so I had to force restart again. Is there any reason why it would be doing this and is there any fix?

    It froze again and I wasn't even running a scan. I had just clicked on the icon on the menubar and tried to get to the preferences and everything became unresponsive. I'm giving up on this piece of software and uninstalling.
