Sophos locks up on initial scan

Hello I want to try out Sophos but cannot get past the initial scan. The scanning stops exactly at the same place each time, at around the 42000 item. The log is not really telling me anything. Is there any way to determine why this is happening? I am on a MacBook Pro using the latest OS. Thanks.
