Support ending for SAV for Mac version 8 in April 2014

Please be aware that support for version 8 of Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X is ending in April 2014. April will be here sooner that you think so act now to check you have upgraded to version 9. It's a free upgrade and the installer can be run over the top of the version 8 home edition installation.

Check the version of Sophos Anti-Virus you're running. From the menu bar icon select 'About Sophos Anti-Virus'. Make sure it says 9.0.x...

If you see 8.0.xC you can download version 9 here are upgrade.

Important: Version 9 can only be installed on Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and higher. 10.5 and lower is no longer supported due to changes required for the newer Apple app installer. Furthermore as 10.5 is very old Apple no longer provide security updates for it so we cannot recomment you use it.

Additional information to answer more questions (18th March 2014):

At the beginning of May 2014 after v8 has retired we will migrate all endpoints running v8 to v9 if the Mac has OS X 10.6 or higher. Any Mac running OS X 10.4 or 10.5 will remain on version 8 without updates as these OS X versions are not supported by Sophos or by v9 version of the product.

Note: any endpoints running SAV v8 on OS X 10.4 and 10.5 will show failed updates after v8 retirement, it will also state in the updating logs that the version is no longer supported.

I found your free HE8 edition very efficient and would really like to continue using Sophos.
Do you have any alternative (i.e paid subscription) options for protecting older 10.5.8 mac PPC machines that can't be upgraded to v9 after april 2014?

Unfortunately no. Sophos' support for the older OS X versions is stopping for free and paid - all at the same time.

Although the application will no longer be supported, will it still pick up virus definitions? Moving to 10.6 is not an option for the PPC base.

no. Please see Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac v8, end of life and upgrade to v9, although it's primarily for informing customers of the managed version the basic statements apply to the HE as well, note the repeated will remain on v8 without updates.

While I am naturally disappointed, thanks for version 8.
A power PC Mac remains my main machine at home, and sophos has helped me not pass viruses on to others.
It has been beyond generous for Sophos to help out home users like this, and I can be nothing but grateful (as well as dissapointed ;-)

I have an old PPC Mac (which is my old secondary machine) using OS X 10.4.11 running Sophos 8.0.6. I just checked my Sophos update, and I think the virus definitions file is from 2012 (he log shows "Version 4.80, 06 August 2012"). Trying to update it gives me the following error (also from the log):
Update started at 4/12/2014
Error: Could not update Sophos Anti-Virus at 11:41 on 12 April 2014
Update failed
Have the updates for version 8 stopped already, or will they stop sometime in May? What is the last version 8 version, and what was the last date for anti-virus updates for version 8? Should I still be able to get it before support completely ends for version 8?

Not quite yet, my Sophos 8 on 10.5.8 (PPC) is still updating without complaint; but it is April already, and all good things come to an end.

Yea, I only noticed that my Sophos AV updates hadn't been occurring while I was investigating a kernel panic. (Because this thread is related to the end of version 8, I have posted my inability to update in a different thread.)
