I recently updated to Sophos 9.8 and my problem began.
My bandwidth usage went up by 250% !!!
I can't afford that. I have to live with a bandwidth cap.
Sophos 9.7 just worked fine.
I have a 27'' iMac, Mavericks, 12GB RAM
I simply had to uninstall Sophos.
What is the problem?
Could be Web Protection. See this post: http://openforum.sophos.com/t5/Sophos-Anti-Virus-for-Mac-Home/Home-version-for-Mac-sending-out-data/td-p/14057/highlight/true/page/2. That was talking about sending information out.
You can see from Activity Monitor the process eating your data quota (filted for in below, but clicking the 'Sent' column would change that)...
I suggest reinstalling and disabling Web Protection as a test, then switching on again. See this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=Tv1pynlYlGI#t=208
Might take a small amount of monitoring to see what's happening.
