SAV slows system to a C-R-A-W-L when downloading updates.

I am running Sophos Anti Virus 8.0.18C on my older Mac Pro Desktop running OS X 10.6.8.
 
Whenever Sophos downloads its updates, my system slows to C-R-A-W-L.
 
Is there anyway to push Sophos further into the bakground so it chews up fewer CPU cycles as it downloads? It's maddening at times.

    Hi,

    I too have this issue.  My workaround is to abandon automatic updating and just choose a manual update via the Sophos shield menubar icon whenever I'm leaving the machine for a few minutes.  It's not like Mac threats are that prevalent for it to matter much.  I consider once a day to be sufficient.
