Is Saphos on all the time

I'm new to Saphos (obviously.)  I keep the Icon on my dock but my question is: does the program have to be open to be protecting my mac?

    You can quit the program from the dock etc.  Your computer runs a system process that provides protection.  Just need to make sure the menu bar icon is a black S and then you know the real time scanner is working.  If the S looks gray and pale on-access is probably off.

    My icon is not black, it's  blue but I checked preferences and supposedly "live protection" is enabled.
