Manual scan

Hi! I just downloaded sophos and I have to do a manual scan for class.  How long does the scan take?  It has been calculating for over an hour.  Also, I need to print screen after the scan is complete.  How do I do this?

Thanks,

Prodi

  • Scan time depends on the size of the hard drive and what other volumes (drives, external drives, virtual disks) you have mounted.  If you're using Time Machine you probably want to exclude that for example.

I've read on this forum that the time SAV takes to 'calculate' a scan is longer if you create a custom scan and list only certain folder - a scan of the whole drive is calculated quicker, but that's not to say the actual scan time is smaller.

However saying all that the calculating stage taking over an hour sounds wrong.  Hence:  reboot first and carry on below.

Now scan the whole drive but exclude Time Machine (if you use that) and any large external drives.  If you're using the 'Scan This Mac' then open the scans window, double-click in the white area around the 'Scan Now' button, and exclude any large volumes as required.  Example:

And regarding taking a screenshot press:

    Command + Shift + 3

...and a screenshot of the entire desktop will be saved to your desktop as a png file (very handy).  Or press:

Command + Shift + 4 + tap the spacebar (and release)

...and the mouse cursor will change to a camera and allow you to select the window to capture (to a file on the desktop again).
