Grey Shield and Quarantine Manager is unlocked

When I log onto my computer, I find the Sophos shield grey and the lock unlocked. Does this mean that a scan was NOT performed upon login? Also, when I select "ScanThis Mac," I am given two options: Scan with current privileges OR Authenticate and scan.  I am the only one using this computer -- so what does the first option mean? What are current privileges?

  • A gray shield generally means the on-access scanner is off.  Check under preferences it's switched on...

...and for more info on shield examples see: http://openforum.sophos.com/t5/Mac-tools-help/Sophos-Anti-Virus-for-Mac-menu-bar-shields/m-p/14325/highlight/true#M54

If it's switched on under Preferences then there is a problem with the on-access scanner (try a reboot).

    If you're seeing this prompt...

...then you're running a scan with an action set to be performed if a threat is found.  One of these is set:

...if the scan, running under your profile, finds a threat in a system folder then it needs your authentication to remove it.  I'd suggest leaving the setting to 'Log only' and if something is detected use the Quarantine Manager to look at what was found before cleaning it up - I always think it's better to see what was found and learn from it (how did it get there, what is it, how could be stopped in the future).
