While perusing the Console Messages log for something else, I happened upon this error multiple times:

Google Chrome[85012] Cannot find function pointer SUMCMPluginFactory for factory C1DF11E5-FD12-45AD-BBE4-EE058CB88A16 in CFBundle/CFPlugIn 0x1a0e6200 </Library/Contextual Menu Items/Sophos Anti-Virus.plugin> (not loaded)

I know I was able to use this more recently than that.

And even the system only has read and write access.

I tried to add execution privilege but can't. Shouldn't that be an option?

So this is why I'm not seeing 'Scan now with Sophos Anti-Virus' in the Finder context menu without resorting to third-party apps.

Why is this happening? What does Google Chrome have to do with this? How can I fix this?

  • Hi PacoH,

We eliminated the Contextual Menu plug-in in our latest release (version 9.0) and instead hook into the proper system services to make ourselves available in the FInder's right-click menu. Note that the Finder is notorisously finicky about putting new services in the right-click menu immediately after install/upgrade - sometimes (particularly older versions of OS X) you need to log out and log in again (or restart Finder) in order to force it to catch up.

Google Chrome doens't have anything to do with our scanning, its just complaining because its trying to load the Contextual Menu plug-in but can't. Its safe to ignore that message.

Note that we aren't putting any significant effort into maintenance of version 8 any more, we are only issuing monthly detection engine & data updates and we are only committed to fixing critical security or vulnerability issues. All new effort is going into version 9 and its successors. The Home Edition of version 8 will be retired later this year, everyone will be migrated to version 9. We haven't set a date yet, but expect it will happen no later than November.
