Could not contact primary server - Sophos AV Mac Home Edition

I noticed over the last few days an 'x' in the middle of my Sophos shield - when I try to 'update now' I get the pop up window to say "Could not contact primary server"  nothing has changed on my Mac, and I cant work out what is going wrong.

I am using MAX OX - 10.8.2

I have also followed the only recommendations, and tried to uninstall Sophos, to inc=stall a fresh version, but there  is no 'uninstall' in my Apps (I have not deleted it, so cannot work out why its not there....)

Anyone got a any suggestions on the 'primary server' issue, or how I can uninstall to try a fresh install...?

Many thanks

  • I had the same problem with the Sophos on my Mac. Then, after doing something completely unrelated to my system, I have been able to connect every time.

I changed the length of time before my Mac goes into "standby" mode. Apple has this time set to a relatively short period to maximize battery life. I lengthened the time to eliminate the slight delay between opening the lid of my MacBook Pro and when I could enter my password.

I got this from the site iMore which reported it from Ewal.net. Here's what you do:

    Launch Terminal.

    Type: pmset -g

You will probably see: standbydelay 4200

I changed my standbydelay to a value of 43200. I did so by typing:

    sudo pmset -a standbydelay 43200

You will have to enter your password. Be careful, you can mess up your computer if you don't type this in exactly as it should be.

I suggest you search the web for the larger article on iMore or Ewal.net.

Let us know how this works.
