sophos has stopped running message

running sophos 8.0.8c with OSX 10.8.2 I receive the "sophos has stopped running" error message. 

Also, scan hangs: settings for scan are scan archives, clean up threat, and there are no excuusions, starting from root directory.

Any ideas on cleaning up these problems?
