  • On the Sophos Antivirus for Mac Home Edition there are two versions of SAV for Mac OS X available.

    • Version 9 supports OSX 10.6-10.8.
    • Version 8 supports OSX 10.4/10.5.

If you have OS X 10.4.11 installed go to the page above and click on the link titled Have OS X 10.4 and 10.5? Download Sophos Antivirus for Mac Home Edition version 8.x*

  • That's what I clicked on and tried to download, but I received the following error message:

"Couldn't open "Sophos Anti-Virus Home Edition.pkg". This package type requires Mac OS X 10.5."

  • I don't have 10.4 so I can't test this for you.  The Sophos site says SAV 8 is compatible with 10.4 (Tiger).  Out of interest can you open Terminal, change directory to the folder you downloaded the file to (maybe cd ~/Downloads ) and they type:

    openssl md5 savosx_80_he.10.8+.dmg

I've download the SAV 8 file and the checksum for me is…

    MD5(savosx_80_he.10.8+.dmg)= 9520cbe2d9eb08633504cd8c56975af6

Does this match the checksum you get?

While you have Terminal open what is the out for this command:

    sw_vers -productVersion

  • Hi secinsh,

Apologies, our website is wrong. We dropped support for Mac OS X 10.4 for the Home Edition quite a long time ago. Our recent website revamp must have introduced this error. I have requested to have that fixed.

When Apple released 10.8 they introduced a requirement on a new installer package format that is not compatible with Mac OS X 10.4. So either we have a package that works for 10.4 but doesn't work with 10.8, or we have a package that works with 10.5+. We went with the second option.

Note that Apple no longer provides security updates for Mac OS X 10.4. Last security update was September 2009. As a security vendor, we cannot recommend that you continue to use this older operating system.
