This is not common, but there is a thread on here reporting a few people getting repeated kernel panics using 8.0.5 on Mountain Lion.  Your first step should probably be to (at least temporarily) disable on-access scanning.

Do you happen to know if the panics correspond with anything else you are doing, such as a Time Machine backup or running a VMWare session?

I'm having the same issue. Kernal Panics - 6 in the last day. Lion (10.7.4). Sophos all updates. Spotlight is doing a full reindex. That's the only thing out of the ordinary. I have uninstalled due to the constant Gray Screen of Death GSOD crashes.

Forgive my ignorance, but how can you tell what app is causing the kernel panic?

My machine just started doing it yesteray and I've had nearly a dozen crashes.  It's driving me nuts.

If you read the crash log in Console.app after starting your computer back up, it indicates what process was running when the kernel panicked.  There are a number of sample logs available on this forum to compare yours to.
