I can't get the sophos app to quit on my Mac os and it is preventing me fom accessing my g mail

What is it doing to prevent you from accessing GMail? is it showing a detection alert when you attempt to go to https://mail.google.com ? If so, what is the detection name?
You should just need to disable the on-access component in the Preferences to delete the offending email (if that's the cause).
