Other threads were not helpful on this I'm afraid. I also experienced this--my first ever scan of local drives reached "320,588 items remaining" and stopped. Completely, for 24 hours. It found one harmless deleted phishing threat in a deleted email message, and I removed it manually using the Quarantine Manager window. The scan remained stopped, and was still stopped the next day.
I force-quit the app process and UI process, removed the application using AppCleaner (which gets rid of all associated files, plists, etc and did a clean reinstall. I unchecked "scan inside archives and compressed files" as suggested in another thread about slow scans (although this is NOT slow. It is STOPPED) and also turned off On-Access Scanning just in case.
When I started my first scan of local drives with this new, clean installation, it immediately popped up a Scans window showing, guess what? exactly the same spot: 320,588 items remaining. And stopped dead. Has been stopped for 18 hours now.
The Stop Scan button does not work. Quitting and restarting the app does not work--it "resumes" at the same point in the hung scan. Neither the Sophos AV nor the Sophos UI server process are hung, and neither is using much CPU (1.5 and 0.5% respectively) or Ram (17 and 129mb respectively) .
System: iMac 2.8GHz Core i7, 12GB Ram, 1TB Disk/660GB free. OSX 10.7.3 (Lion) with all updates.
Looking for an alternative app I guess.
