More than one anti-Virus program

Is it possible or even advisable to run more than one anti-virus program on the same machine?

I am using VurusBarrier X6 right now, but the updates for that program are not free and before getting rifd of it, I'd like to try the Sophos free Home edition.

Any thoughts, advice...?

  • Make sure you disable any on-access (live) scanning it does before attempting to install SAV.  You should never have two on-access scanners running at the same time, as they'll fight for the same resources, prevent each other from accessing files, and potentially detect each other's components (not by design, but it sometimes happens due to the way they work).

Generally, it's best to only have one installed at a time, but there shouldn't be any major problems if only one has on-access scanning enabled.
