How to disable Sophos when computer fails to start up every time

Hi,

Today I had a crash which I think was related to Sophos. A scan was running, mouse stopped responding, next thing I know the Mac is restarting. Except it didn't restart, just left me with a grey screen ...

After doing a safe boot & then a PRAM reset I got a message about it having restarted due to a fault, looked at the log entry and the Sophos kext was the only one loaded. Then it crashed again (almost instantly after dismissing the "send to Apple?" box). Since then, the machine will not start up completely at all. Sometimes it gets as far as drawing teh screen properly, but then it goes back to a grey screen and starts over - left it doing this for a good hour at onepoint and it even got as far as opening a finder window one time, but I can't interact with it at all.

I've tried to do a single user boot but either I'm doing it wrong or even that doesn't work. I can't even get the thing to boot off the SNowLeopard installer disk (the only one I have - actually running Mountain Lion ...). Anyone got any pointers on how to remove Sophos from this so I can actually use my computer again/find out if this actuially was the cause of the crash?

Cheers,

Martin
