It´s cool that Sophos has a free MAC version available, but there are simply too many issues...

Why isn´t the update process ´intelligent´ when downloading?

It chokes my network connection completely, isn´t throttling an option here?

    Maybe if you stated what network connection you had, people here could help. Maybe the problem can be fixed - for instance Sophos regularly updates on my Laptop while I am travelling and using a USB stick via Vodafone, so the connection can be slow, but the updates never caused any further slowing down

    Possibly his issue is relating to Live Protection more than automatic updates -- a few cheap routers aren't RFC compliant and don't handle the Live Protection data well.

    But as you say, without knowing what the actual issues are, there's little we can do to help.

    The idea behind Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac is to have a tool that at once is very simple to use, but is also very powerful for those who want to use more advanced features.  It sounds like for him, it isn't living up to his expectations of "simple to use" -- and that is regregrettable.  Hopefully others will provide reproducable feedback on issues similar to his so that the product can be made proof against the issues in the future.
