installation problem

I have been trying several times to install Sophos Anti-Virus for Home without success. The download occurs successfully and the installation appears to be fine until I get to the window that says, "Completion. Congratulations! Sophos Anti-Virus is protecting your Mac." But no black shield appears in the menu bar and when I hit the "continue" button on the lower right of the window, I get a window that says, "There were errors with the installation. You may want to try installing again. The Installation failed. The Installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."

This has happened mutliple times. I have tried downloading several times all with the same result.

I'd suggest the first steps to be:
1) use Disk Utility to repair disk permissions
2) reboot with the shift key held down to disable kernel extensions, and then attempt to install.
This error indicates that something (most likely systems permissions) is preventing the install process from completing -- mostly is keeping one of the files from being written to the system.
