Issues on OSX. "Sophos Anti-Virus Error" "Sophos Anti-Virus is not running"

System: OSX 10.7.5 / Sophos 9.0.11 / 3.51.0 / 5.01 / protects against 6958836.

The first indication of a problem occured yesterday. The "Sophos Anti-Virus is not running" message appeared. It occured this morning on boot also.

I started a full scan today. The scan has stalled about halfway through. Items remaining: approx 500,000. The scan screen also has "No threats found" and "Issues detected"

From this morning I'm seeing this line appear in the logs: (btw, New Zealand timezone)

com.sophos.intercheck: Info:ic_worker_start: unable to load on access kext at 16:05 on 23 June 2014

The quarantine manager is empty.

I'd prefer to accurately diagnose the issue and cause before moving on to the obvious uninstall/reinstall scenario ;  ).

Any assistance appriciated. Happy to provide whatever logs and system information are required.

  • That message happens when one portion of the software observes that another part of the software isn't running. Specifically, there is a "watcher" that tries to inform you that one of the "important" processes (Intercheck, or ConfigD, or SophosAntiVirus, or AutoUpdate) is not running. Sometimes its normal for these processes to restart, and if they do they *might* not restart fast enough if your system is very busy. Generally you can ignore this message unless it happens frequently.

We are looking to make some changes in an upcoming version that improves the "watch" behavior significantly.
