Scan hangs on Lion

I recently downloaded the free Sophos AV program and am trying to run in on my Mac running Lion. Twice now I've tried to run it and it has hung for more than a day with 1,640,574 files left to go. Whatever it's doing, it's working hard at it because it's using about 100% of the processor time for both cores. Earlier, it hung for hours on one file when there were 2,082,708 files left to go and it finally moved on but since it's been more than 24 hours now, I think I can safely say that it is hopelessly hung. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

  • I did a little more legwork and Disk Utility says I only have 758,256 files on the computer. So I'm a little more confused as to what the millions of "items" are that Sophos is checking.

  • If you have "scan inside archives" enabled, it will recursively unpack your archive files to scan the contents.  Some archives can be quite large.  While scanning an archive, the progress bar doesn't progress.

However, getting stuck for that long is a bit worrying.  What does the scan log say?

Also, if you open terminal.app and type in "lsof |grep SophosAVA",  what are the last results listed?  They should be the current archive being scanned followed by the temp file in /private/tmp that the archive is being expanded to.  The scan log location should be listed a few items above :)

  • I have the same problem. Did you find a solution? Upon the first scan sophos has been stuck for a day now approximately half way through. It detected 3 threats all for windows which I just removed from the list.

  • I found it did this 3 times - each time though was after I'd tried to 'do' something to Sophos in the background (i.e. run update, open/change preferences etc).  It doesn't seem to like being fiddled with whilst it's running a scan.  I eventually set mine running and didn't touch anything Sophos based and it completed in about 30 mins (there were a couple of occasions when I though it had hung again, but it was just taking its time).

  • Something to look out for...

I just attempted to replicate this and failed; however, I was able to get the Sophos Anti-Virus.app front end to quit with no errors by scanning an archive that was bigger than the space available on the main drive.
