I am new to Sophos. I installed Sophos Free for Mac. I received a message that Sophos was not scanning. How do I check to see if it is actually running.

Assuming you have SAV v9 and Mac OS X 10.6 or higher...
You can try rebooting the computer and seeing if that helps. Otherwise, and particularly if this was an upgrade from SAV v8 to v9 then according to the post below the quickest thing to do is uninstall and reinstall (links at the bottom of the thread).
Note: To remove SAV use Spotlight:
Once reinstalled check the shield in the menu bar - it should be black.
