uninstall greyed out version 3.19.1 on Mac OS X

I noticed my icon on the menu bar was greyed out. I believe I need to uninstall this version to upgrade to a later one, only I am unable to do so. I have 'removed' sophos from my application folder to trash (and emptied) but it remains. This version does not have the 'uninstall sophos' application either.

I have tried to unlock my computer etc. The only drop down box opening on the sophos menu when I click on it is 'about sophos ..'.

If someone could help (step by step please) that would be fantastic as I don't want to install anything until I can solve this issue !

There are a lot of users posting on this forum about this process of taking SAV (an installed application - not an application bundle), dragging to Trash, and emptying the Trash. SAV isn't FireFox etc. - you don't install it by dragging to Applications, and you don't uninstall it by closing it down (Cmd+Q) and then dragging out of Applications. It's got be fully installed because it's more than a user application (like a browser or game) - it's gone to hook into the system at a lower level so it can protect the computer before something is opened.

I'm curious as to why this happens so much? Sorry to target you :o), but I'd struggling to understand why this is the route many take.

It can cause a can of worms to get out of it. I'd initially suggest...

Note: This is all based on the install actually being the 'Home Edition' and downloaded/installed from sophos.com. If it's been distributed by a uni or you work it could be the on-premise version and there the installer would be in: /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/Remove Sophos Anti-Virus.pkg
