Very slow scan

I am a newbe to Sophos and a senior citizen that knows very little about computers. I have been running a scan on my I mac, the computer is now in it's second day of scanning. Is this correct, seems too long to me? It shows still over 3,300,000 items to go. Am I doing something wrong?

  • Hi Adam,

That is definitely a very slow scan -- somethimes that happens if you have a large archive/disk image/etc. that needs to be decompressed for scanning, and a limited amount of storage space to store that in.  Sophos Anti-Virus prefers being slow and not affecting computer use over being fast and monopolizing your computer's resources.

After your scan finishes, you likely won't need to do another full scan, as the on-access component will watch for anything new that is written to your computer.  Unchecking "scan inside archives" will prevent this slow scan from happening, but will also mean that you won't  have scanned inside any archives (hence why it's useful to do one full scan).
