Sophos as a passive anti-virus?

I do not want Sophos to run at all unless I am running the weekly full scans I plan to do.

Is turning the on-access scanner off good enough or are there still other processes running in the background?

  • The Intercheck process is on at all times whether you use on-access scanning or not.  It is also used for scheduled product updates (multiple times per day).  However, OS X being the unix-ish OS that it is, you shouldn't notice any difference in performance whether or not you have that running, except during updates (these can be disabled too, for manual updating; this is not recommended however).
