Sophos and external hard disk drives

Hi. I was wondering if the Sophos'"Scan Local Drives" option scans my attached external drives (attached via USB and FireWire for example, not over a LAN) and if the "On Access" scanning also scans the similarly attached external drives?

    Now I know why I see the message "This HD last scanned on 19 Feb 2013":

    I started "Scan local HDs" again  (this time I was asked for an administrator's password), but after about 7 minutes the scan stopped, with over 2 million items still to go. No threat appears to have been found, as far as the scan went. 

    Presumably, the other time I initiated a scan since 19 Feb, the same happened: Sophos quit and left the date of the last scan the same.

    Now I will disconnect the target-mode iMac and try again.
