Sophos and Time Machine

Hi all,

I recently installed Sophos and almost right awat it found some windows based viruses (worms, and trojans) in some files on my HD.

That is all great, my concern, though, is that some of the viruses were detected in the folders of my Mac Time Machine back-ups. Is it safe to have Sophos remove files from the Time Machine back-ups, or will this cause errors in the TM database?

This problem, in my oppinion, is similar to accessing the folders in Finder created by TM and from there delete individual files. I do not know if this is recommended (or even possible).

Thanks for any replies on this somewhat cumbersome issue!

  • This is definitely a cumbersome issue, and the answer is really "it depends."

The safest way to remove malware on a TM volume is to check the scan logs for the full file path, enter TM, navigate to that file path, right/control click the file, and delete all backups.
