Are there really threats out there for Mac users?

I am relatively a new Mac user and switched from a PC because of the safety factor.

Are there really threats out there for Mac users picking up viruses and key loggers and spyware/malware etc?

And if so is what is recommended to a new Mac user for fool proof protection from any threats in terms of what product I should use to protect my Mac Book
