Checking Primary Server

Hello

The little shield in the tool bar has been showing the black arrow on and off and I am informed it is "Checking Primary Server".  This has been going on for about 3.5hrs. How long is this supposed to take?

  • If you have Mac OS X 10.6 or above are you running version 9 (not 8)?

If it's hung download then rebooting the computer is quick and easy.  Could be a temporary problem with the (Sophos) server it's trying to contact or a local network problem (that may be temporary too) - may want to reset your router to flush any problem there.

Tricky to say without know your connection speed, whether or not it's peak time and if your ISP is experiencing problems.  Things like proxys, network firewall and and routing can affect it too - but that's assuming you have a complex set up.

I'd give it an hour (of waiting post reboot/ router restart) and have another go.  Could be just a bit of bad luck.
