Sophos says it has updated but the version numbers show as unchanged

I ran a manual update this morning, and Sophos said that it had been updated. However, the About screen still shows "Version 7.2.4C, threat engine 3.16.1, threat data 4.62, release date February 7th 2011. Protects against 2302808 threats".

How can I check that my A/V has actually updated - the logs show the following, but as above the About screen is unchanged?

com.sophos.autoupdate: Info: Checked primary server at 07:06 on 10 March 2011
com.sophos.autoupdate: Sophos Anti-Virus was updated

Also, is there a page (like ClamAV) which lists the latest versions of the definition files? Lastly, how often does Sophos update the signatures for the Home edition? ClamAV used to issue several definition updates every day.

There's probably a change in the number of threats ... :smileyhappy:. Seriously, the Download latest virus identity (IDE) files page lists the number of IDEs for your current threat data version. Threat data is kinda database and updated monthly. IDEs are additional and updated definitions and are issued as needed (if necessary several times a day). As of writing you see (threat data/# of IDEs):

    4.63/160 (corresponds to 7.2.5)

    4.62/294 (7.2.4)

    4.61/464 (7.2.3)

All these combinations provide the same level of protection. Roll out of a new version is staged (not only is the licensed product rolled out before the HE edition but also made available by and by to different customers over several days) to distribute the load on the updating network. IDE updates are available to all customers (paid and free) at the same time. To repeat - 4.62 with 294 IDEs gives the same protection as 4.62 with 160 (and we can deduce that 134 IDEs have been integrated into 4.62 to produce 4.63). If you count the number of files in /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/IDE/ (checked the licensed product but the location is probably the same) it should give the number shown on the IDE page.
