Local scan freezes mac book pro

The scan has been run three times and it has failed three times with a message in the middle of the screen saying you need to restart your computer. "Hold down the power button until it turns off then press the power button" . I'm a slow learner I tried it three times, it gets to about the last 70,000 files and then freezes with this message.  I tried it just using the bare computer with no modem or aux hard drive connected. Is this likely to be a computer problem or is the anti-virus program suspect. I have bootcamp installed with windows 7 which gets used infrequently maybe once a month to access software programme which is not available in apple.I have set up various custom scans which have worked okay still narrowing down the field to try and find what is causing it. Has anyone got any ideas on what I am doing wrong,

thanks

  • Have you tried it with archive scanning disabled?

If you check the scan logs in console.app, it should tell you the last thing you were scanning when things went wrong.  The system log in there should also indicate what caused the kernel panic.  It's possible this is a software conflict, but it could be just about anything (low HDD space for temp file storage, etc.).
