Web Protection like being on dial-up

Hi guys,

First of all, thank you for a great anti-virus product. I've tried quite a few av's for Mac, and I find Sophos the best on a number of fronts.

When I upgraded to version 9 I was very pleased to see the Web Protection feature.

However, it regularly slows web browsing so much that I feel I've gone back the 90s and dial-up Internet. I am on an iMac with dual-quad core i7 at 3.4 GHz with 16 GB RAM, so my machine isn't slow. I also have a fast 60mb internet link that is working fine.

Do you have any tips to improve performance? Do you have any plans to address performance with the Web Protection?

To be honest, I feel that I will have to turn off Web Protection if it doesn't improve, and that would be a real shame.

Thanks for the free av product!

Kind regards,
Mark.

  • Hello again,

I just did a little experimentation with settings. There are the two options for Web Protection:

    1. Block access to malicious sites using realtime URL reputation checks.
    2. Block malicious downloads from websites.

If I leave only option 1 on (URL reputation checks), the browsing experience is slow.

If I leave only option 2 on (scan and block downloads from websites), the browsing experience is near 'normal'.

So it isn't the scanning of the page and contents, its the lookup for the reputation! This is a sad state of affairs.

Do you have any tips for speeding this up? Do you have plans to address this? Are we on a set of 'second class' reputation servers as it is a free tool?

    Kind regards,
    Mark.
