Calculating process won't stop

I downloaded Sophos, the free version on my iMAC.  When i start the scan the "calculating" process will not stop.   I'm waiting for the progress bar to apear, but it won't.  Please provide guidance to get the Sophos to operate normally.  Cheers!

    What version of OS X are you using?  How long are you waiting for Calculating... to complete?

    My guess is that automatic updates kicked in while it was calculating, and the interface is no longer connected to the actual scanner.  Try temporarily disabling automatic updates, restarting your computer, and doing another local drive scan.

    If it still gets stuck here... does opening terminal.app and typing "sudo sweep /" and then entering your password get you any further ahead?  It's the same scan, but without the clickable interface.  If there's an error, it will type it out in detail on the screen.  If there's no error, the above suggestion should have fixed the problem.
