I was unable to to open: "the following disk images were not recognized" on my IMac runing OS 10.8.5

savosx_80_he.10.8+.d not recognized

Did you miss a bit of text from the file extension when posting the message? The filename should end with a .dmg extension (savosx_80_he.10.8+.dmg) - shouldn't make too much difference though. More likely the download is incomplete.
Why not download and install the latest version (9) rather than 8...
