Need help recovering from a fouled install

I'm on MacOS 10.8.5 and my Sophos installed is in a fouled state.  I made the error of trying to remove by sending Package Contents to Trash.  Both SophosUIServer and SophosAntiVirus services are running, yet I have no UI to interact with.  I actually thought it was gone, but Sophos detected and quarantined a virus (and I was notified of that).  I've tried installing version 8 and 9 to try to do a clean install and both installers tell me I have a previous version I need to uninstall first.  

The remove package instructions I've found on the Internet also do not work... Anybody got any tips on how to stop the services and cleanly uninstalling all of the components so I can start over again?

    Booting into Safe Mode (shift key down) should stop the Sophos services from running. At least on my version 8 installation, a "Sophos Remove" application is installed along side "Sophos Anti-Virus" and "Remove Sophos Anti-Virus" is installed with V 9, though with the different name, they aren't next to each other. Is the Remove application present when you reinstall? If so, try running it in Safe Mode.

    For you to full uninstall it, first make sure it is not updating by going to the Sophos Shield. Then:

    1. Find Sophos by going to Mac HD--> Library-->Sophos

    2. Double click on either Remove Sophos Anti-Virus.pkg or Remove Sophos Anti-Virus.app depending on the version you had installed.

    3. Follow the wizard and see if your problem is solved after this.

    It worked for me so I just though I should share it with you.
