On Access Scanner Disabled on Computer Start-UP

When I start up my MacBook Pro OS X 10.7.4, the Sophos icon is gray.  Sophos opens upon start up (it is a start up item), but the icon is gray because the on-access scanner is not running.

If I go into preferences, the on-access scanner page has the security lock in the unlocked position, and it indicates the on-access scanner is not running, with no option for turning it on.  I do not know how the lock is being authenticated to unlock it, because I am not doing it.

The solution is to turn on my wi-fi and start the update process.  This immediately makes the on-access scanner start running.  Problem is when there are no wi-fi networks handy.  I work in the field quite a bit, so I do not always have wi-fi access.

When I check the console log, i am getting an almost continuous error message in my system log that reads as follows:

SophosAntiVirus: Error in SMTP Client, domain: 12, Code 8.

Something is clearly wrong.

  • Im having exactly the same issue.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled and its made no difference at all.  If anyone has a solution in *simple* step by step language, that would be great.  I am not IT literate particularly!  Its a bit frustrating that so many folk seem to be having this issue rumbling on...  im very unhappy about having no protection, yet I have to come online to try and find a solution :smileyfrustrated:

    thanks

  • Sounds like you may have damaged preferences files.  They do not get removed when you uninstall.

Please see http://openforum.sophos.com/t5/Sophos-Anti-Virus-for-Mac-Home/Scanning-for-viruses/m-p/10558#U10558 for instructions on how to ensure you start with clean preferences.

  • I happily used Sophos in Snow Leopard, and the first month or so after upgrading to Mountain Lion 10.8.2 Sophos continued to work as before. Now, Sophos manifests the same symptoms others have described: manual scans quit randomly, and on-access scanning is greyed-out and unavailable in Sophos' Preferences.

When I try to enable any changes in Sophos' Preferences, I am presented with a dialog advising "On-access scanner has failed to set preferences." Here's a screenshot: http://i785.photobucket.com/albums/yy131/dbrickk/desktop.jpg

Following each of Andrew's steps in the previous answer had no effect, although I note that the Sophos application downloaded by me just now from the Sophos site is Version 8.06c, rather than the 8.0.8 he mentions.

Andrew, what might I try next?

    Thanks.

  • I realized that after all that I described in my prior posting immediately above, I had neglected to restart the computer. I did so.

Sophos is now operating correctly, with on-access scanning green and running, and the main application not quitting mid-scan.

  • Good to hear!  I guess I should have highlighted te restart step as well.

  • I, too, am having problems with Sophos on Mac declaring "On-Access Scanning is Disabled." Like  others, uninstalling and reinstalling did not solve the problem. Recent posts suggest I need to manually remove plist data. I'll try that in a minute. But I would like to underscore the remark made by andreasfmpro:

It is disconcerting however, that it reported "one threat found", but the quarantine manager had no data in it. I have not been able to locate that "one threat".

I hope that that is taken care of soon.
