How to clear up a thread "Mal/Conficker-A"

Hi all,

I run Sophos Anti-Virus with version 8.0.6C on my Mac. It found a thread "Mal/Conficker-A" with path anf filename: "/Quarantine/Q850867615956997.647278.30.030.file". It could not clear up the thread and asked for manual cleanup to remove the thread.

I also clicked on the thread and then saw the website: http://www.sophos.com/en-us/threat-center/threat-analyses/viruses-and-spyware/Mal~Conficker-A.aspx. However, I did not know what I should do next to remove the thread. Could you please help me?

Thank you,

haitra

  • Do you have Sophos set to move and quarantine, or is that folder created by some other software?  If the file is locked, Sophos won't clean it up.  To do a manual cleanup of all items in the /Quarantine/ folder, you need to create a custom scan, and add the /Quarantine/ folder as the place to scan.  Then set the action to "delete" and it will delete all items it finds.

However, if you've got other antivirus software running, you're going to have to turn one of them off before the other can clean up.

Conficker may also be difficult to clean on a Mac because part of the cleanup looks for settings only found on Windows computers -- setting to "delete" will once again fix this problem, as it'll just delete the entire file instead of attempting to clean up non-existent registry items as well.

  • Hello,

I have the same problem. How do I add the Quarantine folder as the place to scan.

In fact, my warning message and my sophos opened up after I was tring to eject a CD from my computer. I have not been able to eject the disc nor clean up the threat. Please help. I have a mac and only the sophos as antivirus.

  • Dear Sir,

I just found and deleted the file by following the examples on your forum. Now my sophos does not want to stop the general scanning I originally started and it's more than 5 hours. Is it supposed to go that long. Even if I force quit the application it is still running. How do I do, please explain.

    Thank you,

    Gi
